Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are also called as thermoplastic rubbers. They are a class of copolymers or a physical mix of polymers usually a plastic and a rubber which consist of materials with both thermoplastic and elastomeric properties. While most elastomers are thermo sets, thermoplastics are in relatively easy to use in manufacturing especially by injection molding. Thermoplastic elastomers show both advantages typical of rubbery materials and plastic materials. The principal difference between thermo set elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers is the type of cross linking bond in their structures. In fact, cross linking is a critical structural factor which contributes to impart high elastic properties. The crosslink in thermo set polymers is a covalent bond created during the vulcanization process. On the other hand the crosslink in thermoplastic elastomer polymers is a weaker dipole or hydrogen bond or takes place in one of the phases of the material.


Since it is possible to recycle, it is replacing rubber profiles and PVC too. The gives much smooth appearance surface, faster extrusion process and involves less space as compared to rubber extrusion processes. It is non toxic and environmentally conducive. They are moderately elongated and process able as a melt at elevated temperatures. It has no batch to batch variation because no additives and curatives added as in case of rubber.
